“What if—?”

So often I come to the weekend without any idea of the subject for my next blog post.

But I am learning not to fret. Rather, I remind myself, “Just sit down at the computer and make a beginning. You’ll have it.”

So, again this morning, I did just that: sat at the computer, opened my email, and from the top of the list brought up Facebook. This is what I read:

What if Mars has water on it because we used to live there and we messed up the climate so badly that we had to send an escape pod to earth with only Adam and Eve in it and the pod was the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs?

In the comment space, I wrote this: “Nothing is impossible with God.” And ‘What if —?’ is the door to many possibilities.”

And before I finished writing, I knew the subject of this week’s post.

My subject is not the content of the question, but rather the wonder of the possibility. During the past six months, I’ve been struck by the wonder of such possibilities as visits from extraterrestrials and the passing from earth’s dimension into the unknown next dimension when one dies.

I will not use my time here on earth, trying to determine answers to the many “What if—?” questions.

But I will indulge in the wonder of the impossibilities that are historic fact like:

  1. There is a Creator.
  2. He created the physical world that we study, know, and often hold as an absolute.
  3. He created with words only.
  4. He breathed life into humanity.
  5. He stepped into His creation as a created being. (This is the one that causes me to wonder the most: the Artist actually stepped into His painting and lived in it.)
  6. As such, he suffered poverty, misunderstanding, exclusion, loneliness, torture, and a horrible death.
  7. He returned to life! He lives!
  8. He loves me with His presence, His word, His provision, His protection.
  9. God’s Kingdom exists here and now on Earth—not then and there. It is wherever redeemed humanity is.

As we realize the truth of the immediacy of God’s Kingdom, a sense of wonder, the awareness of the benefits of His presence among us, grows.

David demonstrates his sense of wonder and awareness at all Yahweh does in many of his psalms, none more so than Psalm 139. Here are excerpts from the Passion Translation.

Lord, You know everything there is to know about me. v. 1 You’ve gone into my future to prepare the way, and in kindness You follow behind me to spare me from the harm of my past. You have laid Your hand on me. This is just too wonderful, deep, and incomprehensible! v. 5, 6

Will you, with me, indulge in the wonder of God with us, Emmanuel?
