Best Foods Mayonnaise, known as Hellman’s east of the Rockies, has been one of the very few brands that I have loyally purchased throughout my adult life. No other brands that I have tried match the standards of taste and texture that Best Foods have maintained since 1913–one hundred and thirteen years!

However, the last time I purchased the brand (January 7, 2026), the inevitable had occurred. Of course, you know what the “inevitable” is. Right? No? Like taxes, it is CHANGE!

CHANGE! Burden to the elderly, blight to well-laid plans, bane to improvements, real and so-called.

Here you see the former and the current jars of Best Foods Mayonnaise.

The old one sits on its bottom. The new one sits on its head which has been conveniently modified to serve as both resting place and spout. The top of the jar recalls the look of the former bottle.

The labels show that the old one held 30 ounces; it’s price range was $4, sometimes less on a good sale. The new one holds 20 ounces. I purchased it at the fabulous sale price of $5.78!!

Was I happy paying 25% more for 2/3 the mayonnaise? Of course not. But I’ll not buy a less expensive brand because Best Foods has been my mayo of choice for decades. Its flavor and texture suit my taste choices.

As I ruminated on the far reach of inflation by global economy, I began to think of God. He declares of Himself in Malachi 3:6, “I am the Lord; I change not.”

God’s nature is comprised of thousands of facets. Like a mirror ball spinning in the darkness, splashing points of light all about, He seems to change. But no, the ball of mirrors does not change. It’s the flashing lights that whirl and dance. I can trust the changelessness of His holiness and justice, His love and mercy.

And I smile at the changes in my life, both large and small, that come quickly and sometimes so slowly as not to be noticed. Changes that I embrace and changes that I oppose. Changes that take my eyes off the Constant One, causing doubt, worry, and fear.

But every change is another opportunity to trust in the multi-faceted God who is Love, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

The bottles and their prices may have changed, but the contents remain the same. So, I trust the product and will continue to buy it as I trust my God and continue to praise Him.
