Doggie Devotionals
The breakout book of an English teacher, Doggie Devotionals are the author’s reflections on the deductive logic that dog is to human as human is to God. Using her daily interactions with Sammy, her long-haired dachshund, she considers how her finite nature draws the loving attention of the infinite Creator.
The titles of the 20 meditations suggests the specific consideration in each. In “Meet and Greet,” Sammy greets everyone with equal goodwill, showing us that we should meet people without bias. In “Looking Up,” Sammy always is looking up to Linda, “his mom.” Does she look up to God in the same way? She wonders. In “Waiting,” she questions her waiting on God. Is it like Sam’s “without impatience or complaint?” Sam stays “Within Sight” while Linda works outdoors, pleasing her with his obedience. Likewise, she can please her Lord.
The 60-page volume is arranged by day rather than chapter. As is customary with devotional books, each day begins with a scripture and ends with a prayer. It also contains two poems as well as a preface and an epilogue.
A 93-year-old great, great grandmother comments, “Such a unique perspective. It’s really good.”
A clinical chaplain and pastor writes, “This small volume reminds us that sometimes the clearest picture of grace comes with a wagging tail.”
“Doggie Devotionals are short, yet full of punch,” says fellow author, Shirley Mozena.
A college junior remarks, “Each story…reflects deeper truths of faith, obedience, and love. Gentle, wise, and soul-soothing.”
