It would be easy – – – – – –

It would be easy to live according to Christ’s teachings if it weren’t so difficult.

Consider the precepts He gave to His apostles during His last supper on earth, as recorded by John.

Love one another. 13:34

Believe in God; believe also in Me. 14:1

I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me. 14:6

If you love me, you will keep My commands. 14:15

Because I live, you will live, too. 14:19

Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful. 14:27

His words were simple words; you don’t need a dictionary to understand them. Taken at face value, they can be understood by children.

So, why do we hardly see any love in the world? Why is it so difficult to believe? Why are we so afraid? Why are we so weak?

The answer is as easy as the words in the precepts. We are human. We are sinners.

“Well, so, now what?”

Repent. Confess your fears and weakness and turn away from them.

“Oh, but that is so hard,” you may whine.

Yes, because we are sinful humans. That’s why He said, “Believe in Me. Keep My commands and don’t be fearful.”

We could go round and round in this conversation forever; so, let’s just cut to the prayer of a human who realized his limitations and prayed, “Lord, help my unbelief!”

During Holy Week this year, may you be more truthful about your humanity, its fears and sin and weakness to truly repent. Rather, believe in the abiding presence of Jesus and His resurrection power to make living His way easier than it has been.
