Letting Him Take Care

Another really busy week keeps from fresh writing; however, it gives me another opportunity to share a doggie devotional

Taking Care of You

Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

—1 Peter 5:7

Sammy has a runny eye. The doctor has examined it twice and prescribed eye drops. Still, the left eye secretes a thick mucus that dries to a crust. At least once a day, I clean the eye, scraping off the crust with my fingernail or a Q-tip soaked in peroxide. Sometimes he wiggles and squirms to get out of my grasp and tries to forego the treatment. But I’ve learned to sit in a chair with upholstered arms and bring him into my lap, crossing my leg to support him and raise him a little higher. Turning him onto his back and resting his head on the chair’s arm, I find that he accepts what is coming more readily. He even relaxes as I scratch away the dried secretion and softly say to him, “Good boy. Sweet Sammy. Thank you for letting me take care of you.”

The question comes to me: Can God say that to me? “Thank you for letting Me take care of you.”

I thank Him for taking care of me. The older I get the more aware I am of His providence toward me. It is amazing, and my thankfulness is constant and true. It should be.

But for Him to thank me for letting Him take care of me requires my total surrender to His omnipotence and omniscience, just as Sammy does now on my lap. Such surrender results in relaxing and resting, easing the therapeutic process, whatever it may be, whether that process be from me to my dog or from my God to me.

Dear Abba God,

May I surrender to your care even when it is uncomfortable and unwanted. May I be like Sam when he’s in “good dog” mode, relaxing and resting in your loving care. In the Savior’s grace, amen.

    1. You are most welcome, Diane. It is a pleasure to serve the Lord by writing of his loving kindness to His creations. If only we could/would love Him in kind.

  2. Recognizing God’s care and surrendering to it is a powerful and comforting idea. Thank you for sharing it!

    1. Of course, you may use it. Allowing Him to care for us is a vital concept to grasp, especially as we face the infirmities of aging. May the Lord’s blessing rest o our two ministries as they combine to comfort others.

  3. Such godly responses to your post!

Me? Well, I’m all too often about the wiggle, not the wait. Looking forward to hearing more, “Good girl, Sweet Sheri!”

    1. Both in the present and the future, I’m sure that you get a lot of “Good girl, Sweet Sheri.” Certainly, you get it from me as I read your comments. Thanks and love, Linda
