I appreciate the kind responses to my post of last week. To update, I’m pleased to report that Sammy’s week has been filled with good days. I shall be marking my calendar daily with a code that indicates his good days, fair days, and bad days.
At his last Hannah Pet Hospital visit, the doctor advised, “As long as his tail keeps wagging and he has more good days than bad days, we won’t have to consider the next steps.” That is a sensible recommendation.
Another update—I’ve just been invited to participate in an author’s event in Washougal, Washington, on Saturday, September 6 from two to five. The invitation came from a former member of the Vancouver Christian Writers’ Group. She also offered the promotional opportunity of Sammy shirts. How cool is that?
And now, I share the recommendations that will become part of Doggie Devotionals.
Doggie Devotionals offer readers a gentle and heartwarming series of reflections that explore the relationship between dogs and their humans—and, in turn, between humans and God. Highman uncovers spiritual insights in the ordinary moments shared with her four-legged companion. Perfect for animal lovers and seekers of gentle spiritual encouragement alike, this small volume reminds us that sometimes the clearest picture of grace comes with a wagging tail. The Rev. Daniel A. Burnett, M. Div; M. M; clinical chaplain and pastor
Daniel grew up at Hinson Baptist Church, was one of Ed’s sixth graders, was in several of the plays I directed, and was one of the faithful who sat with Ed during his final months.
“Doggie Devotionals invites readers into quiet, grace-filled moments of connection between pet and person and between heart and Heaven. Each story draws from everyday life with Sammy, the dog, and reflect deeper truths of faith, obedience, and love. Gentle, wise, and soul-soothing. A faithful companion in written form.” –Melanie Nguyen, Author of “Third Culture Dispatch,” The Daily UW
Melanie lived with us for her four years attending Central Catholic High School in Portland. She is now a senior at University of Washington.
Doggie Devotionals are short, yet full of punch. Without words, our canine companions speak truth to us. Whether young or old, you will enjoy these devotionals as you begin your day or before you drop off to sleep.

As I proofread this article, I am listening to “I Speak Jesus” and thinking that this post is testament to the tapestry of life, full of people, pets, possibilities, and Providence. It is wondrous and a definite recommendation to consider again the blessing of Romans 8:28, We know that all things work together for good for to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose. I really do hope that you know this blessing.
Congratulations on your progress in getting your book into print, Linda.
If Shirley Quiring Mozena’s father was Henry Quiring, my late husband Lynn grew up at Brush Prairie Baptist, where Henry was pastor.
I WILL ASK SHIRLEY ABOUT THAT. THANKS FOR WRITING.
